The American wife wants to be happy. Since her husband ignores her, and reads through the whole story, she asks for material things that makes her feel valuable including eating at a table with her own silver and a candle on it, a spring season, grows her hair out and brush it in front of the mirror, and of course, a kitten, which she got her attention from looking outside the window that indicates loneliness when it’s raining. Apparently, she couldn’t have it because when she told her these to her husband, George, he said, “Oh, shut up and get something to read,” which indicates that he wasn’t supportive to his wife. She feels something for the padrone because he makes her feel important, unlike her husband that he doesn’t actually care and mean what he says. The American wife also wants to be satisfied in her marriage life. She mentions several times that she wants the kitten so badly that it is okay for her if she can’t have a long hair or any fun as long as she have the kitten. Kitten is a young cat or a baby cat which indicates that she wants to have a baby. She says, “I want to have a kitty to sit on my lap and purr when I stroke her,” means that she wants to have a baby girl. Notice that she uses ‘kitty’ instead of a ‘kitten’ as if it is a name and she also addresses the kitten earlier in the story as ‘her’ instead of ‘it.’ At the end of the story, the maid brings a tortoiseshell cat indicating that the padrone asked her. The maid must have told the padrone that she was looking for a cat when she went outside. Maybe the padrone thought that she was empathetic and she was willing to go outside, raining, just to get the cat or maybe the padrone felt loneliness inside him, too, which we don’t know.
