SHARP Essay

Every year thousands of military personnel are victims of sexual assault and the number has been increasing immensely. The Department of Defense fiscal year 2017 annual report on sexual assault in the military states that, “Reporting of sexual assault among active duty service members has increased by 10 percent in 2017 alone (Wilkie 2018). My goal in this essay is to distribute information that will help explain the increase in sexual assault in the army and provide a better perceptive edge for the future.
Sexual assault occurs when one individual does not consent to the act of sex. This can go along with any number of situations including when the individual cannot give consent due to age restrictions or impairment. The act mostly occurs when centered on alcohol or narcotics. The Department of Justice Website shows that sexual assault is, “any nonconsensual sexual act proscribed by Federal, tribal, or State law, including when the victim lacks capacity to consent” (DoJ 2018). In my own opinion, the training implemented for soldiers is unfortunately providing a very high-risk assessment. In other words, soldiers are not getting the support they need to help protect them from the wrong choices.

The army needs to propose a better plan for future training so that the annual number of sexual harassment/assaults decreases. However, studies show the Department of defense is working with the SAPR program (Sexual Assault Prevention and response office) and intends to make things better for service members. “The intent is to reduce the occurrence of sexual assault as well as other co-occurring destructive behaviors like problem drinking and violence” (Wilkie 2018). This means that although the current reports are showing bad numbers there is already a contingency plan in the works.

Many issues have been discussed that are in need of change. Sexual harassment/assault takes form in a number of different ways. Service members are affected every day due to poor training modules and unsupportive environments. Therefore, in conclusion, every unit should try to provide more help to their soldier. Meaning, every leader should make sure there organization receives a good amount of sharp training while also policing up each other when need be. This will in turn give the army a chance to formulate guidelines in the fight against sexual assault and harassment.
