Nursing plays a big part in the wellbeing of patients and their outcome. For patients to receive the best care services, it is essential to have nurses and staff with good management and leadership skills. In chapter ten, the author states: “although the terms leadership and management are usually interchanged, they do not reflect the same meaning. (Zerwekh & Zerwekh Garneau, 2018). I will be discussing the differences of leadership and management, theories of both leadership and management, and characteristics of effective leaders and mangers.
Management: As we learned in chapter ten, management can be compared to nursing process because both are problem oriented processes. Being management is a process in which one is selected to and assigned for this position to move a company’s plan forward. Management has authority because they are appointed to this position. This type of power comes with be responsibility and are held accountable of the company’s outcome. Management is held accountable of planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling while in this position.
Leadership: A leader is a person that inspires other staff members without being appointed to. A leader motivates and coaches other by leading by example. For example, if hear of a patient that has a complaint of an uncomfortable air mattress. As a leader, you will take initiative and put in a maintenance request to fix the problem instead of ignoring it until it gets to management. Leadership does not give you authority over people and do not hold you accountable for the company’s outcome.
Some of leadership theories are “Great Man” theory. This means, these people are born with unique traits of leadership that are not learned but inherited naturally. For example, these leaders can lead and influences a group of people towards a company’s goal. Another theory is “situational leadership”. This type of theory, the leader can take on and approach any situation with no difficulty. For example, according to Blanchard and Hersey (1964), these types of leaders are able to change and be flexible in situations like being able to handle patient emergencies and decided on how to prioritize and move a group nursing staff to help with an emergency if it arises. Other theories are transformational leadership and interactional leadership. Leadership also has three different styles. For example, autocratic leadership: these types of leaders don’t involve staff opinions and make decisions on their own. Autocratic leader like to have control at all time. Laissez Faire: This type of leadership gives no support or input to staff. Staff tends to make decisions on their own because this leader does not take control. Democratic leadership: This type of leader allows input from staff when deciding. This leader refers to “all of us” instead of “me”.

Characteristics of effective manager is: it is important to have knowledge of job description to be able to move the staff forward. It is important to have time management, be professional and lead by example and abide by the company’s policy always. An effective manager should be one that is consistent with routine to better support staff and determine with the plan is effective in moving forward. Other characteristics of effective manager is having common sense, be opened minded, and be able to be flexible depending on issues as they come up. Also, an effective manager will also empower and staff and take initiative for the best interest of the company and employees.

Characterisitics of effective leader are

Conclusion: Both leaders and management are very important to have a successful team. As we learned one is born a leader but not all management know how to lead.
