Media, Culture and Society: An Introduction’ is a book written by Paul Hodkinson (2011). The essay will focus especially on chapter six titled “Media, as Manipulation? Marxism as ideology’. This section of the book explores how according to Marxist the mass media is an obstacle on the way to necessary social change. For Marxist the media plays an important role in the function of maintaining the power and influence held by bourgeoisie. Different ideologies and views will be used to create a critical overview of the section in discuss and challenge potential bias and distorted views.
The first argument raised by Hodkinson, was a discussion from some scholars from the Frankfurt school, Adorno and Horkheimer (1997). They argue that through media the capitalist logic, surrounded by reason and rationality was suffocating and killing independent critical thought and creativity of individualsĀ
